Almost never. Genuinely unsalvageable pianos are rare, and I will tell you honestly if yours is one.
Do older uprights need different care?
Mostly they need the same thing: regular tuning and someone paying attention. Older instruments are more likely to have a sticking key or a squeaky pedal, and minor repairs like those are part of a normal tuning appointment rather than an extra.
How often should my piano be tuned?
Yearly works great for most homes. Every six months is better when a piano gets more than an hour of playing time daily.
Why does my piano go out of tune?
Each string carries about 160 pounds of tension, and there are over 200 strings. That pressure gradually slips the tuning pins. Temperature swings also expand and contract the wood, adding pressure and shifting pitch.
